Phone signals get weaker in a lift because the metal structure of the lift and the steel-reinforced concrete shaft act as a Faraday cage, reflecting and absorbing the radio waves that your phone uses, preventing them from reaching the cell tower and vice-versa. This metal enclosure creates a barrier to the electromagnetic signals, causing a severe drop in signal strength and loss of connectivity.
How lifts block phone signals?
Faraday Cage Effect: A lift’s metal walls and the concrete shaft surrounding it create a Faraday cage, a closed structure that blocks electromagnetic fields.
Signal Reflection and Absorption: Metal reflects and absorbs the radio frequency signals that carry your phone’s data and calls.
Line of Sight: The metal enclosure also blocks the line of sight between your phone and the nearest cell tower.
Signal Penetration: While radio signals can penetrate brick walls, they struggle to penetrate the thick, metal-laden structures of an elevator.
Factors that can influence this
Glass-walled lifts: Lifts with glass walls, which are less likely to have the same extensive metal shielding, may allow for some signal to pass through.
Here, we share a case of elevator coverage signal from a customer we have collaborated before
16th floor elevator shaft, with a total depth of 44.8 meters
The elevator shaft is narrow and long, and the elevator room is fully wrapped in metal, with weak signal penetration ability
The “Elevator Signal booster“ used in this project is a new model developed by Linchuang for elevator signal coverage, which can solve the signal problems of poor signal, no signal, and inability to call for help in emergency situations inside elevators. Supports the vast majority of signal frequency bands (2G-5G network), and can be freely matched according to the environment. Equipped with ALC intelligent adjustment, it can effectively prevent signal self excitation and eliminate interference with base station signals. You can use it with confidence!
The elevator treasure set includes: outdoor receiving antenna for the host, host, indoor user antenna for the host, car receiving antenna, slave, and car transmitting antenna accessories.
Installation precautions
1. Find a good signal source outdoors and install the host outdoor receiving antenna, with the antenna facing the direction of the base station.
2. Connect the outdoor antenna and amplifier RF IN terminal with a feeder, and connect the amplifier RF OUT terminal to the indoor transmitting antenna, and confirm that the connection is secure.
3. Confirm that both the host and slave are installed and connected to the antenna before powering on.
4. Check the signal value and internet speed inside the elevator. The RSRP value is the standard for detecting whether the network is smooth. Generally, it is very smooth above -80dBm, and there is basically no internet below -110dBm.
With the rapid growth of elevator ownership, various regions have gradually improved the “Regulations on Elevator Safety Management”, which also stipulate that before the delivery of newly installed elevators, signal coverage must be carried out on the elevator car and shaft.
